A woody evergreen perennial with aromatic leaves and reddish pink flowers. Position: full sun Soil: moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) An upright, woody perennial Salvia with spikes of luscious deep pink, two-lipped flowers held by purple calyces. This late summer, and into autumn, sturdy sage has aromatic leaves and exceptionally free-flowering blooms making it an ideal candidate for a pop of hot pink in the middle or back of borders, as well as a great choice for sunny, low maintenance containers. Pair it with Salvia ‘Caradonna’ or Penstemon ‘Raven’ for a late summer, richly coloured combination. Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon they start to fade. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Prune back around a third of the plant, making the cut just above a pair of leaves – this will maintain the structure and provide a sturdy base for new growth. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
