An early, yellow flowering herbaceous perennial with a red ringed centre. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to September Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) Bright, scarlet red flowers are held above luxuriant green foliage from mid to late summer. Originating from Australia, ‘Josh’ is a perennial cross between Salvia darcyi x microphylla. It shows the typical deltoid (shaped like a capital ‘Delta’) pastel green leaves associated with S. darcyi. Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon as they start to fade. As with most salvias trim back in late summer for autumn flowering and then leave over the winter. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
