Position: full sun to lightly dappled shade Soil: humus-rich, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to October Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) Open-mouthed vivid blue blooms rise above the green, deer resistant, sage-scented foliage. Similar to the much-loved ‘Amistad’, this frost-tender perennial is easy to grow, preferring well-drained soil in sun or part shade and is excellent for cutting, and drought tolerant once established. Great for bees and other pollinating insects, ‘Animo’ would look great in contemporary or city gardens as a medium to large container specimen or as a long-flowering splash of blue for a moist, well-drained spot in the back of a sunny border. Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon as they start to fade. As with most salvias trim back in late summer for autumn flowering and then leave over the winter. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
