Position: full sun to lightly dappled shade Soil: humus-rich, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to October Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) Similar to the much-loved ‘Amistad’, open-mouthed pink and purple blended blooms rise above the green, deer-resistant, sage-scented foliage. Excellent for cutting, and drought tolerant once established, this frost-sensitive perennial sage is easy to grow, preferring well-drained soil in sun or part shade. The flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds, but bees and other pollinators will happily step in as a substitute. Grow ‘Amigo’ as a medium to large container specimen or offer it a moist, well-drained spot in the back of a sunny border. Garden care: To prolong flowering remove the flower spikes as soon as they start to fade. As with most salvias trim back in late summer for autumn flowering and then leave over the winter. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or manure around the base of the plant in spring. Protect from excessive cold and waterlogged soils.
