A medium-sized, red flowering evergreen shrub. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist, well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil or ericaceous compost Rate of growth: average Flowering period: April to May Hardiness: fully hardy Masses of pinkish-red, trumpet-shaped flowers with dark crimson spots appear from April to May. A hybrid variety of evergreen Rhododendron, originally developed in 1902, ‘Nova Zembla’ has good heat and sun tolerance and is well suited for hedging and screening. Garden care: Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of neutral or acidic organic matter (composted tree bark, leaf-mould, decomposing pine/spruce needles or composted bracken). Avoid planting too deeply, apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf-mould around the base of the plant each spring.
