As it is one of the earliest into bloom, it’s useful for kicking off the season, but then it also puts on a good display in the autumn, when the normally mid-green leaves turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and orange before dropping. Garden care: Avoid planting too deeply. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring.
