Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil (for container-grown bulbs use two parts John Innes No.2 compost to one part sharp grit) Rate of growth: average Flowering period: April to May Hardiness: fully hardy From amongst the basal rosette of rich green foliage, pretty green-budded flowerspikes emerge in mid-spring, opening from the base to scented small white flowers. Less vigorous than M. armeniacum, ‘White Magic’ makes a lovely addition to the alpine garden or rockery, and looks great in a pot filled with mixed seasonal colour. Garden care: Add lots of well-rotted leaf mould, compost or manure to the planting hole. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base of the plant and provide a top-dressing of general fertiliser each spring.To encourage new growth, cut off tired-looking leaves down to the ground in spring. This is also the time to lift and divide large clumps.
