A genuinely ‘striking’ plant, the ‘Lightning Jewel Orchid’ is a terrestrial orchid used to ground-growing conditions unlike its more numerous epiphytic cousins that cling to the branches of tropical trees. The unique foliage, with forked or chain lightning veination in silvery-gold, is prized over the cola-coloured stems from which pink lipped flowers emerge annually. A love of regular, even humidity makes Macodes petola a great subject for well-lit bathrooms and terrariums. Home care: Avoid the roots drying out but ensure the compost is kept lightly moist with sufficient drainage and airflow to avoid root rot. Jewel orchids are sensitive to temperature swings, so providing stable warm temperature swings, so providing stable warm temperatures (around 18-24°C) and a humid environment is key. The unusual veination is strongest in bright but not direct light. Slow growing, they require little in the way of fertiliser but would benefit from a seasonal houseplant or specialist orchid liquid feed.
