A purple-black flowering herbaceous perennial iris. Position: full sun Soil: well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to June Hardiness: fully hardy Blooming over many weeks from mid to late spring, this impressive, contrasting dark purple iris will leave you ‘Stoked’… Rich plum standards and purplish black falls with large ‘caterpillar-like’ tangerine beards emerge from shafts with up to 4 stalks regularly carrying 9 to 12 buds at maturity. A tall iris that will work well with complementary purples and mauves such as Delphinium ‘Dusky Maidens Group’ and Astrantia ‘Moulin Rouge’ as well as contrasting with the hotter colours of Trollius chinensis ‘Golden Queen’ and Salvia ‘Royal Bumble’. Garden Care: Plant shallowly with the upper part of the rhizome sitting on the surface of the soil, incorporating a low nitrogen fertiliser in the planting hole. After planting remove the upper-most third of the leaves to protect against wind-rock. In exposed areas stake with bamboo canes in early spring. Remove the stems after flowering from the base as this will concentrate the plant’s energy into producing new rhizomes. Divide and replant about every three years.
