Pink flowers turn wine red in late summer. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist, well-drained, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil Rate of growth: fast-growing Flowering period: July to October Hardiness: fully hardy Emerging in rounded domes above the lush green foliage in midsummer, the flowers of this striking hydrangea are initially soft pink. Then, as the season progresses, the colour starts to deepen and intensify, until towards the end of the season, the flowers are deep wine red. Compact and showy, it’s perfect for a pot, and it also looks wonderful when woven through a mixed border where it will offer several months of changing colour. Please be aware however that in subsequent years, the flower colour may vary depending on the soil’s pH. Garden care: Leave the old flower heads in place through the winter. As the new shoots start to emerge in spring cut back a third to a quarter of the previous season’s flowering stems to the base and cut back the remaining flower heads to the first pair of buds.
