Super-sized flowers. Position: sun to partial shade Soil: fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: slow at first, then medium Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: fully hardy The airy-looking flower heads of this cultivar are larger than the species, so throughout the summer, it puts on a wonderful display. It’s also an easy to grow and undemanding climber, with woody stems that form aerial roots along their length as they grow. These roots help attach the stems to walls and fences, so after giving the plant some initial training, it can climb on its own! Garden care: Plant in moist, fertile soil (ideally at least 45cm away from the base of the wall) and do not allow the soil to dry out while the plant is getting established. Using bamboo canes, angle the stems back towards the wall and once the stems have secured themselves, remove the supporting canes. This hydrangea flowers on the previous season’s wood, so if you need to prune it back, do so in late autumn or early spring, but be warned that this will restrict flowering the following year.
