Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: fertile, moist or well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to August Hardiness: fully hardy ‘Pluie de Feu’ is one of the early Heuchera hybrids developed around 1902 by Lemoine et Fils at the nursery on Rue de l’Hospice, Nancy, France. Translated as ‘rain of fire ‘, this Heuchera is a vigorous, clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial with lobed, rounded, toothed, mottled, dark green leaves. In summer, slender, wiry stems with panicles of pale pink flowers emerge. Garden care: Plant ‘Pluie de Feu’ incorporating a scoop of well-rotted compost into the planting hole. Heucheras grow well in most average soils – not too wet or too dry. Strong summer sun can scorch and crinkle the foliage. Spring and autumn are the best times to plant, when the ground is moist and warm, so they settle in easily. Remove tatty foliage in autumn. Lift and divide clumps every couple of years in early autumn to improve vigour, and replant with the crown just above the surface of the soil. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the crown of the plant in spring.
