Position: full sun Soil: any well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to June Flower colour: green Hardiness: fully hardy A tough, decorative and undemanding evergreen shrub, ‘Benkomasaki’ has a distinctly upright habit, which makes it ideal for hedging, but it’s also useful for adding structural interest to the planting scheme when woven through the border. It’s primarily grown for its lustrous, dark-green leaves, but look closely in late spring and early summer and you may also see clusters of small green flowers, which are occasionally followed by pink-flushed berries. Invaluable for coastal gardens or tough urban areas where little else will grow, it will also cut a dash when potted up for the patio. Garden care: Tip-prune young plants in mid- to late spring to encourage bushy growth and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant. To achieve an informal effect and to avoid cutting through leaves it’s preferable to use secateurs, rather than garden shears.
