A late winter, scented, evergreen daphne shrub with pure white flowers. Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained, humus-rich soil Rate of growth: slow Flowering period: January to March Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) A chance mutation from its pink-flowering parent, ‘Perfume Princess White’ shares an early and long-blooming mid-winter to spring season. Deliciously fragrant white flowers emerge along the stem as well as at each branch tip. A dense, upright bushy plant with glossy green pointed leaves and disease resistance for a sheltered spot near an entrance or gateway in a border enriched with plenty of organic matter. Garden care: Daphnes prefer to be in the ground (rather than in containers), where they enjoy a deeper, cooler root run. Best in well-drained but moisture-retentive soil that contains plenty of organic matter, they won’t tolerate drought or waterlogging. Avoid excessive root disturbance during planting and keep pruning to a minimum since the plant is susceptible to die-back. Where necessary after flowering, lightly trim to remove misplaced branches in order to maintain a compact habit.
