An evergreen rock rose shrub with papery white, maroon blotched summer flowers. Position: full sun Soil: moderately fertile, well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to July Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) Cistus originate from dry, rocky parts of the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, and so are drought-tolerant and low maintenance. They produce masses of flowers in midsummer, but each lasts only one day. In June and July, ‘Alan Fradd’ produces large, crumpled, white flowers splashed with maroon at the base of each petal, set against dark green, lance-shaped leaves. Try this rounded, sun-loving, evergreen rock rose towards the front of a sheltered, sunny, well-drained border, or in a container. It will tolerate chalky soil and salty air. Garden care: Choose a sheltered location, away from strong winds and frost pockets. Allow enough room for the plant to grow as Cistus don’t respond well to hard pruning if they outgrow their allotted space. They are happy in light, well-drained soil so no additional organic matter is needed. If the ground is heavier (clay) then add a generous amount of well-rotted compost to the soil to improve structure. After flowering, pinch back young plants to encourage a bushy habit. Lightly trim or cut back any stems that spoil the symmetry of the plant. This plant should never be pruned hard.
