Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist but well-drained, fertile, humus-rich, soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May to June Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) This is a handsome plant that can be threaded through the herbaceous border, but as it originates from North American prairies, it also looks wonderful when planted in generous drifts in meadow-style settings. The star-shaped flowers are a soft azure blue, and they open from the base of the upright spike in late spring and early summer, adding colour and form to the planting scheme. Once planted, leave them undisturbed in the ground and they will spread to form naturalised clusters. Garden care: Camassias prefer to be planted in the ground in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil and will tolerate heavier clay. Try to plant them where they will remain for several years as they resent being moved. Apply a generous layer of mulch around the crown in areas with hard frosts. Plants in pots may need to be protected from hard frosts by wrapping them with plant protection fleece or moving to a southerly wall or sheltered location if severe or prolonged cold weather is forecast.
