Position: full sun or partial shade Soil: moist but well-drained soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: May and June Hardiness: fully hardy This undemanding deciduous shrub is a spectacular sight in autumn when it’s green leaves turn vibrant shades of orange and red, but it’s also very pretty in summer, when its stems are laden with sprays of hawthorn-like, white (or occasionally pink-flushed) flowers. It’s often grown for its purplish red berries which ripen in autumn, as these can be harvested and used to make jams, jellies or tarts. Garden care: Each year in February or March remove one in three of the older stems of established specimens.
