It was selected for its vigorous growth, compact habit and ability to withstand poor weather conditions. It produces its dense spikes of violet-blue flowers over a long period from midsummer, and the deep purple calyces (the bits that hold the flowers on the spike) hold their colour well – even after the flowers have faded. Garden care: Don’t cut back the faded flower-stems until early spring, as they provide interest in the winter months. Lift and divide congested colonies in spring.
