Position: full sun Soil: well-drained, fertile soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: July to October Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection) A chance seedling sets ‘Heatwave’ apart from its blue-toned cousins but it shares the stage for being an excellent performer for a warm, sunny and sheltered spot. Forming a dense bush of aromatic, liquorice-scented leaves topped with long-lasting pinkish-mauve spikes in summer, hyssops are great for adding vertical accents to a border, with whorls of long-lasting, tiny flowers arranged like a bottlebrush. An upright, bushy perennial sure to be a favourite not just with the bees and butterflies. Garden care: They can be short-lived, but are easily propagated by semi-ripe cuttings in early summer. Like many frost-hardy or borderline hardy plants they dislilke waterlogged conditions. Improve the drainage around the plant by incorporating organic matter especially on heavier soils. You may wish to leave the stems uncut over the winter as they provide seasonal interest and a food source for birds.
